World's leading producers of cement crushing warned that the construction sector in developed markets is a "painful adjustment process undergone, such as lead public debt amounting to a lack of infrastructure spending.

Demand for cement, the main ingredient of concrete, has fallen sharply on both sides of the Atlantic in the past two years, leading producers to focus on expanding in emerging markets.

Markus Akermann, CEO of Holcim, the second largest producer of cement grinding, said: "It will affect at least three to five years, the building materials markets in most developed economies revert to their summits."

The slowdown is most clearly be felt in markets like Spain, which until recently was double the per capita consumption of Germany and the United States.

Mr Akermann said: "He will go to considerable structural changes in the bubble of construction in Spain, leading to slower growth and a process of painful adjustment."

There are also fears among producers of cement, crushing the economy measures the Government had no impact on the construction industry, which has been hard hit by falling volumes of residential and commercial.
